Ten Quick Tips to Encourage Weight Loss

Weight Loss August 24th, 2009

Dieting is hard, and it is much easier to pack on those extra pounds, than to lose weight. These quick and easy ten tips will help you to win the battle the bulge, without the need to resort to fad diets.

1 – Use Smaller Plates
A simple way to lose weight is to eat less. Invest in a new set of dinner plates with a smaller capacity for large meals than your current set. Do not fill the plate up to the edge of plate, but only fill the plate to the edge of the rim.

2 – Read Food Labels
Food labels have plenty of details that can help you to realise your dreams of losing weight. Swap high fat items for low fat ingredients to eat fewer calories without noticing. Reading the labels will encourage you to choose the lighter versions of each food, and will help you to make discerning choices in your diet.

3 – Drink Water
Water has no calories and helps to clear out waste from your system. Drinking about two litres of water a day can help you to feel fuller, so you eat less too.

4 – Snack on Fruit
Fruit is full of fibre, which works to clear waste from your body, and therefore a high fibre diet is best for losing weight. Fruit also contains a natural sugar called fructose, so you can get a sweet treat without fewer calories than pre-packaged, high in sugar snack foods.

5 – Add in Activity
Exercise is one of the best ways to lose weight. Add in some activity to your day by taking the stairs, instead of waiting for the lift. Park further away from your goal and walk. Add in just 30 minutes of strenuous exercise to your daily routine and you will quickly notice the pounds starting to drop away. Exercise boosts your metabolism, enabling you burn more calories throughout the day, even when you are sitting still.

6 – Fill Up on Vegetables
Half fill your main meal plate with vegetables first, and then add in the meat and carbohydrates like rice, noodles, or potatoes. Vegetables are high in fibre, low in calories, and make you feel full quicker.

7 – Wait 20 Minutes before Eating More
It actually takes about 20 minutes for the brain to register the signals from the stomach that the stomach is full. This means you can easily eat more you need. Before you have a second serving, or a dessert, wait at least 20 minutes. You may find that you are full and do not really need that extra food.

8 – Eat Small Meals Often
Eating smaller meals more often is actually better for weight loss than eating three larger meals a day. This is because your metabolism kicks into high gear and burns more calories by digesting the food in smaller portions.

9 – Use Inspirational Photos on the Fridge
Sometimes, just having a dream can help you to stick to your goals. You may want to put a photo of yourself on the fridge, to help you remember why you are trying to lose weight. Other people find inspirational messages serve the same purpose. Use whatever will motivate you to stop and not open the fridge door to get out more food.

10 – Do Not Store Junk Food at Home
Avoid the junk food aisles when you shop. If you do not purchase the foods full of sugar, you will not be tempted to snack on the foods when you get bored or hungry at home. If you want an occasional treat, such as an ice cream, it is better to purchase a single ice cream cone when you want it, rather than store a huge tub of ice cream at home. If you do not have it handy at home, chances are you will do without it, rather than go out especially to buy the sugar laden treat you want.

These ten tips are so quick and easy to implement that you will start losing weight without even really noticing the changes. You can shed those extra pounds, without resorting to fad diets which may damage your health.
